About the image:

Favela Rules

I was in São Paulo for a reportage about a young man from the Paraísopolis favela who has revolutionized the parcel service there. It’s a relatively peaceful favela, but I was forbidden to take photos in certain places in Paraísopolis. It’s impossible to say precisely who is banning them, but someone from the gang network rules the slum. Before we arrived, I asked my cab driver if we could go to a place that offered a good view of Paraísopolis. There, he checked with the residents to make sure it was okay for me to take photos. They gave the green light. So, I owe the image in large part to my cab driver. To this day, I’m still pleased with the picture because it captures the contrast of São Paulo so well. Rich and poor sometimes live just a few meters apart, like here, where the high-rise buildings of the affluent Morumbi district rise behind Paraisópolis.
