About the image: This is a picture from the series Sight Seeing, for which I was commissioned to wander through my home region of Tyrol and photograph freely. There was no briefing, no formulated goal. The picture was taken in Serfaus. The ski area there is enormous; during the winter, the Snow Show takes place every week. Local ski instructors show tricks while jumping over a jump or demonstrate synchronized skiing on the slopes. Even snow groomers ski down a slope in a kind of ballet choreography. At the end of the performance, there is a big fireworks display. At the bottom of the picture, you can see a tiny spark of the event’s light show. For me, however, the mountain behind the spectacle was more interesting. It was hushed, slightly illuminated; no people were skiing at night on the slopes because they were all watching the ski instructors. The scenery looks quiet, but it wasn’t at all.
