About the image:

Largest Office Building In The World

Artist friends of mine could use an empty floor of an office building in Lower Manhattan as a studio for a few months. From there, they had a great view of the Equity Building, whose construction in 1915 was to have far-reaching consequences. The building took up an entire New York block and was the largest office building in the world when it opened. The problem is that its massive size permanently overshadows the surrounding streets, with hardly any light reaching them. If New York had continued to build like this, there would have been numerous dark canyons running through the city. For this reason, the wedding cake principle was introduced for high-rise buildings: the buildings were to taper towards the top, like the Empire State or the Chrysler Building, and no longer fill an entire block. This loosened up the urban structure. When I took the photo of the Equity Building, I was lucky. The sun was at its best, as it rarely is during the year, and the building shone in a rare light.
