About the image:

The First Painkiller

This is the flower of a Papaver somniferum, an opium poppy. It is one of the oldest valuable medicinal plants in Central Europe, and its history in our latitudes dates back to the 6th millennium BC. For thousands of years, opium (Greek for “little juice”) has been extracted from the milky sap, which contains morphine. It is found particularly in the capsule fruit of the opium poppy, which was first used as a painkiller and later also as an intoxicant. I placed the flower of this remarkable plant on a light load in my studio and took a macro shot of it.
