Title:

Glencoe

About the image: My mother is Scottish, so I have been to Scotland several times and have always been impressed by Glencoe. The valley lies in the southwest of the country. The massacre of Glencoe took place somewhere here in 1692. Scots loyal to the king and the English royal family exemplified the MacDonald clan for not bowing to the English king on time; under the command of Robert Campbell of Glenlyon, a member of the Campbell clan and old rival of the MacDonalds, 120 soldiers killed around 40 MacDonalds men. The whole thing is a little reminiscent of the Red Wedding in Game Of Thrones because Campbell was initially a peaceful guest of the MacDonalds with his men and then suddenly received the order to wipe out the clan—an inside job. My grandmother was a MacDonald; her ancestors survived the massacre. That’s another reason why I have a close connection to Glencoe. I also love the dramatic, treeless landscape. Unfortunately, you can’t see in the photo how quickly the clouds often move there. This is where the humid air that has moved thousands of kilometers across the Atlantic discharges itself. A long time ago, this land was covered by a temperate rainforest that was almost completely cleared. What today is perceived as harsh nature is an artificial landscape.
